"Getting to know: My Yoga

Do you remember a game show where the contestants got to choose a door to open and then had a chance to win whatever was behind the door? There was always some great surprise behind every door…
That’s how I feel about learning Yoga.  Everyday that I practice “my” Yoga it is a discovery of something new.

I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia several years ago and have been struggling with exercise ever since. What type of exercise? How much? Or how little? It was very frustrating and I kept having injuries such as: meniscus tear, tendonitis and muscles that were always very sore.  I had heard of Yoga but really knew very little about it and felt that I was too out of shape to participate. Also, I felt shy about being over-weight.

I drove by the studio (Yoga Dimensions) many times before I decided to go inside for information.  It took courage for me to go to the first class but I was immediately “hooked”.  The atmosphere was very welcoming.  I never felt judged by what I couldn’t do but instead was encouraged to explore Yoga at my own pace while other practitioners were doing the same thing. The teachers (leaders) of the classes are amazing in the way they share their understanding of Yoga through words, movement and music. I have been moved to tears by the beautiful expressions of what I like to call “The Language of Yoga”.

I have been practicing Yoga for a year and I believe it is something I will enjoy all my life.  It has helped me physically by greatly reducing the muscle pain of Fibromyalgia, giving me better core balance and strengthening my muscles. Emotionally and mentally I have benefited as well.  By connecting the breath and mind I have learned to ease stress and have a more positive outlook.  If you have less worry on your mind there is room for other things….all you have to do is open the door."
